Description

Every so often a piece arrives in the shop and we all just stop. The Emelia is one of those. Run your fingertips over it and you'll understand: every inch of this jacket is covered in raised, hand-worked embroidery, swirls and loops and curls of corded thread laid over the cotton like lace that has been sculpted rather than stitched. It is tone on tone, burnt orange on burnt orange, so from across the room it reads as rich, glowing texture, and up close it is a small work of art.

The colour is pure autumn. Think October bracken, a copper pan on the hob, the last of the sunset over the Dee. It is warm and deep and wonderfully flattering, and it makes navy, denim and indigo look more expensive just by standing next to them.

The shape is a softly blousoned bomber: a clean collarless neckline, a gleaming brass zip, full sleeves that gather at elasticated cuffs and an elasticated hem that sits neatly at the hip. Easy, relaxed and utterly elegant. It is 100% cotton, so it breathes beautifully and feels as good as it looks.

This is luxury at its finest, and it is a keep forever piece. You won't wear it for a season, you'll wear it for the next twenty years, and every single time someone will ask where it's from.

About Emily Lovelock: launched in the summer of 2017 at the Who's Next show in Paris, Emily Lovelock is a fiercely independent label that refuses to choose between sophistication and a playful spirit. Every collection is made in-house, by a workforce that is nearly 90% women, many of them trained and employed through the brand's own skills programme. Working directly with artisans means they can keep hand-embellishment and bespoke textile techniques alive, the very things mass production has all but forgotten. Their muse? A woman who is classy, curious about the future and respectful of the past. We know a few of those.

Why We Love It

Because it is the kind of craftsmanship you rarely see any more, made by a women-led team who keep these beautiful techniques alive. Because the colour is autumn in a jacket. And because it turns jeans and a vest into an outfit people remember. Buy it once, love it forever.

Return postage is the customer’s responsibility, and we recommend using a tracked service.

Styling Suggestions

How Hil wears it: burnt orange and deep navy were made for each other, so Hil reaches for her dark denim: the Toxik Rowan Jeans in Inky Navy or the Rowan Jeans in Intense Navy. Underneath, the Wardrobe 44 Pia Camisole in Navy, with its navy and black lace, peeping out at the neckline.

How Sue wears it: over a Faye vest, such as the Golden Taupe or the Off-White, with her Maya skinnies and her beloved stacked olive boots (an ancient Russell & Bromley purchase we cannot get her out of).
