Description

The Tilbury is one of those quiet wardrobe heroes that does an enormous amount of work for not very much fuss. A bias-cut satin slip skirt in deep mulberry, with the most beautifully subtle tonal leopard print that only really reveals itself when the light catches it — a solid colour at a distance and a proper print up close, which is exactly the right way around.

The colour is the seller: mulberry is one of those grown-up reds that works against denim, cream, navy, black, white and just about every shade of green you can think of. The cut is bias, so it falls in that lovely fluid line over the hips and finishes mid-calf — slinky without being clingy, elegant without trying.

  • Hil (5'3", UK 10/12): bias-cut satin is forgiving over the hips, but the waistband is the deciding factor — she'd want to try before committing.
  • Sue (5'0", UK 6): the S would be roomy at the waist, but a slip skirt at her height reads more midi-maxi, which she carries off easily — bias cut suits petite frames because it doesn't cut you in half horizontally.
  • Fabric note: satin doesn't stretch, so sizing tends to work as labelled.
