A note on fit, up front: this one is very oversized. The 5'9" model is in a UK 8 (the S). Hil is normally a UK 10/12 and she's happy in the S too. If you want anything other than a properly relaxed, room-to-layer fit, size down. Sue (UK 6) is in the XS.

And what a jacket it is. The Stella from Pieces — the Danish label that does Scandi essentials with a quiet polish — is a proper diamond-quilted jacket in Garnet: a warm, brick-toned red with a hint of terracotta, the sort of grown-up red that goes with everything and clashes with nothing. The clue is in the name — think the jewel, not the colour of a postbox.

The build is the bit you'll appreciate. Substantial diamond quilting with proper loft (this is the cosy, padded sort, not the thin drapey sort), a clean collarless neckline, a press-stud placket down the front, neat side pockets set into the seam, and long sleeves with a relaxed shoulder. The cut is generous and falls below the hip, so it works equally well thrown open over a shirt and jeans as it does fastened over a knit and trouser.

The kind of grown-up quilted jacket that does the job of an outer layer without ever reading as outdoorwear or workwear.

How to Measure Yourself Correctly

Achieve the perfect fit by following these simple measurement steps:

Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape measure horizontal.
Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, just above your navel.
Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, with your feed together.

Ensure the tape measure is snug, but not tight, and parallel to the floor.

This jacket runs VERY oversized. Size down if you want anything other than a properly relaxed, room-to-layer fit.

The model: 176.5 cm / 5'9", wearing the S (UK 8) for a comfortably oversized fit.
Hil (5'3", UK 10/12, 34EE bust, apple-shaped): Hil is in the S — the same size as a UK 8 model — which tells you everything you need to know about how generous this fit is. She'd wear it open over a fitted layer to keep the line clean (the padding adds volume; a neat top underneath stops it reading as bulk).
Sue (5'0", UK 6): Sue is in the XS. The relaxed cut still reads as deliberate on her smaller frame.

Garnet is the cleverest red — warm, grown-up, properly versatile, plays beautifully with denim, navy, cream, camel and most of the natural-tone basics you already own. Pair the colour with the substantial quilt, the press-stud finish and the relaxed oversized cut and you've got the kind of jacket you'll grab without thinking and never quite put down.

Hil (S): Worn open over a fine white tee tucked into high-waisted blue jeans, with tan loafers and gold hoops. Or over a fine black roll-neck and dark wide-leg trousers — the garnet plays beautifully against black.
Sue (XS): Thrown over her cropped Keira jeans from Toxik and a fitted vest, with chunky tan boots and stacked gold bangles. The colour gives her whole outfit a lift before she's even left the house.
