In a rich, deep wine that works with almost everything already in your wardrobe, it's the outer layer that makes getting dressed feel like the easy part.

The front falls open in a wide waterfall that drapes beautifully away from the body — no fussing with buttons or fastenings. The clever detail, though, is at the back: a neat little tie that nips in the waist and creates shape behind, or — and this is the bit we like — can be brought around to the front and tied loosely for a softer, belted effect. Same piece, two completely different looks. Add two front pockets and a soft viscose-blend fabric with real drape, and the Lana is making a very strong case for itself.

The Lana is a relaxed fit. Hil (5'3, UK 10/12) wears a 10 in this style — the open front means there's no pull across the bust and the relaxed cut falls nicely through the body. The length sits well below the knee on her, which is just right for this kind of midi-coatigan. If you'd prefer a little more ease through the body, go up one.

We've brought the Lana in from a size 10 — so it's one for those who aren't built like a Sue.
Why We Love It

The back tie is our favourite detail on this piece — it lifts it from very lovely to genuinely clever. Tied at the back, it gives shape and definition you wouldn't get from a plain open-front cardigan. Brought around to the front and knotted loosely, it closes the whole thing up without a single button. The wine colour is an added bonus: warm, rich, and the kind of versatile that means it gets worn with everything from Sunday morning walks to smart evenings out.

Hil wears hers open over a fine-knit jumper and tailored trousers in chocolate brown — the wine-and-brown combination is one she's committed to this autumn. The back tie sits at her waist and does the shaping work quietly while the front stays elegantly open. For evenings she pulls the tie around to the front and knots it loosely — it completely transforms the feel of the outfit without her having to change the outfit.
