Red and white gingham on organic cotton — the kind of top that sells itself the moment you put it on. The V-neck is flattering without being alarming, the flutter sleeves are short enough to keep you cool, and the drawstring waist lets you decide exactly how cinched you want it. The fabric is a crinkled, seersucker cotton that feels properly breezy and — joy of joys — requires virtually no ironing. It almost looks better slightly rumpled.

Classic gingham could tip into predictable, but this one doesn’t. The red colourway is vivid and cheerful without being overwhelming, and the shape is clever enough to make it work well beyond summer. We’d wear it with jeans now, a floaty skirt for a holiday and thrown over a swimsuit at the beach.

How to Measure Yourself Correctly

Achieve the perfect fit by following these simple measurement steps:

Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape measure horizontal.
Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, just above your navel.
Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, with your feed together.

Ensure the tape measure is snug, but not tight, and parallel to the floor.

Nobody’s Child recommend sizing up in the Cordelia — if you’re between sizes, go bigger.

Hil is 5’3” and a UK 10/12 — she takes a 12 here, or a 14 if she wants a slightly more relaxed fit through the body. The V-neck is generous, and with her 34EE bust she’d say you may want to keep that in mind when deciding.

Sue is 5’0” and a UK 6 — she takes an 8. The drawstring is long enough that she can raise it slightly higher on the body to flatter her petite frame, which suits her perfectly.

Gingham is one of those prints that never truly goes out of fashion and this red version is particularly good — bright and sunny without trying too hard. The crinkled cotton means you can shove it in a bag, pull it out at your destination and it’ll look exactly as it should. We approve of any fabric that does its own thing.

Hil wears hers with high-waisted straight-leg jeans — the drawstring ties at the waist and the V-neck do the work for her, no tucking required — finished with statement gold earrings and a red lip that picks up the gingham perfectly. Sue raises the drawstring tie slightly higher on the body, pairs it with her cropped Keira jeans and chunky trainers and looks like she’s about to be photographed on a Parisian street corner. Hair down, always.
