First things first — the colour is called Tibetan Red, but it is really a burgundy. A proper deep, wine-stained, after-dark burgundy, not a postbox red. Worth knowing before you click.

And what a burgundy. Cut from a fluid polyester satin that catches the light the way a really good red wine catches the light, the Pella is a high-waisted A-line midi that does the work of three skirts in one. There is enough sheen for evening, enough body for daytime, and enough cut to keep it the right side of grown-up. The elasticated waistband gives where it needs to, the skirt falls into a soft swing, and the midi length lands beautifully on the calf. From Danish brand Y.A.S., who quietly turn out properly chic pieces like this season after season.

Wear it with a fine black knit and ballet flats for daytime, a silk camisole and a heeled mule for evening, and a long-line cream knit and ankle boots once the weather turns. The kind of skirt that makes getting dressed easy for years.

Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape measure horizontal.
Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, just above your navel.
Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, with your feed together.

Ensure the tape measure is snug, but not tight, and parallel to the floor.

Hil (5'3", UK 10/12, apple-shaped): The M fits Hil beautifully. The high waist sits at her true waist and skims everything below — exactly what an apple shape needs from a skirt. The midi length will land just above the ankle on her 5'3" frame.
Sue (5'0", UK 6): The XS is a clean fit. At 5'0" the midi will sit close to her ankle and edge toward maxi, but it works.

Hil (M): A fine black or cream roll-neck tucked in at the high waist with ballet flats and long gold earrings for daytime. For evening — a black silk camisole, heeled mules, a velvet blazer or a faux-fur jacket over the shoulders.
Sue (XS): A fitted black vest tucked in, stacked gold bangles and a layered gold necklace. Her chunky tan boots in the day; her stacked black boots and a long-line cream cardigan come winter.
