Brand new to Wardrobe at The Cross for Autumn/Winter 26, and frankly we are a bit smitten. The Brunsborough is a neat, fitted little jacket in a deep forest green, with frayed edges around the neckline, cuffs and hem. Distressed? Ever so slightly. Shredded? Absolutely not. It is the grown-up version of a raw edge: a bit of texture, a bit of attitude, still perfectly respectable for lunch with your mother-in-law.

It is made from 96% cotton and 4% elastane, so there is lots of stretch to move in, yet it comes up beautifully neat. Clever bust darts and a covered placket keep everything sitting close and tidy, and it buttons all the way down. Hil wears the L and there is no gaping whatsoever. Not a flicker. We checked.

Throw it over a skirt, over jeans, over a dress, add a scarf and off you go. This is the jacket you will reach for every single day until spring, and probably beyond.

The first time you wash it, turn it inside out
Pop a colour catcher in the machine to stop the colour running
Wash at 30°C with similar colours only
Do not tumble dry
Reshape while damp and hang to dry

How to Measure Yourself Correctly

Achieve the perfect fit by following these simple measurement steps:

Chest/Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape measure horizontal.
Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your waist, just above your navel.
Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, with your feed together.

Ensure the tape measure is snug, but not tight, and parallel to the floor.

Hil wears the L, buttoned all the way down, with no gaping at all across the bust. Sue, a teeny tiny UK 6 to 8, wears the M and it is generous on her, so if you are on the petite side, expect a slightly roomier fit.

How Hil wears it: buttoned up, with a flowing One Hundred Stars maxi skirt, either the Orchid Grey or the Primula Blue A-Line Maxi Skirt, her very thick opaques and a scarf thrown on top. The neat jacket and swishy skirt combination is pure Hil.

How Sue wears it: with her Tracy Knit Skirt, or with her Toxik Keira Crop Jeans and her beloved stacked olive boots (an ancient Russell & Bromley purchase we cannot get her out of). The jacket is a deeper khaki than the boots, and the two tones together look fabulous.
