Why We’re Obsessed With ‘Black Colour’– And Why You Might Be Too

Why We’re Obsessed With ‘Black Colour’– And Why You Might Be Too

Written by Hilary James

When we say we’re fans of Black Colour, we don’t mean we like it a bit. We mean we’re all in. We mean Sue owns every single shade of the Faye vest. Literally. They arrive, she snaffles one—labels still on—before it even hits the shop floor. And who can blame her?

At Wardrobe at The Cross, we stock a carefully curated range of independent brands—but there’s something particularly magical about Black Colour. It’s not just the Danish roots or the way it nails effortless style without tipping into fashion victim. It’s how every piece just works.

And for our customers—women 45 and over who know what suits them, have nothing to prove, and want to dress beautifully without looking like they’ve tried too hard—Black Colour ticks every single box.

A Boutique Love Affair: How It All Started

Back in early 2023, before Wardrobe at The Cross had officially opened, we met the ever-brilliant Helen Swatton—Black Colour’s UK agent. This wasn’t just a handshake and a flick through a lookbook. This was a moment. While Hil hadn’t heard of the brand before (she was more preoccupied with finding flooring samples and perfecting the shop lighting), Sue had clocked it—and within minutes, we were both in love.

Helen has been instrumental in making our partnership with Black Colour such a success. Her eye, energy, and endless patience with our constant reorders (!) make her an agent we’re truly lucky to work with. It’s a relationship we value deeply.

Why Black Colour Works So Well For Midlife Women

The real genius of Black Colour lies in the fit. Everything is forgiving without being frumpy. Lots of pieces are sized simply—Small/Medium, Medium/Large, and so on. Which is ideal when you’re perimenopausal and your waistline feels like it’s doing the hokey cokey on an hourly basis.

There’s elastic where you want it. Drawstrings that actually work. And silhouettes that let your body be your body—no pinching, no poking, no pretending.

Faye: The Top That Became a Bestseller

The Faye collection has been the breakout star of our Black Colour edit. Whether it’s a vest, a long sleeve, or a V-neck blouse, it just works. Every version is made from a soft, stretch lurex knit with a shimmer that flatters instead of flattens.

Sue? She takes the XS/S in every colour. Hil? The M/L for comfort and support. It flatters both small and full busts. The scoop neckline is subtle, graceful, and hides your bra—while the shimmer magically disguises those back-bra lines that no woman asked for.

The Faye Long Sleeve

Perfect for layering in winter or for a breezy summer Northwest UK day. It’s lightweight but never flimsy, sleek without clinging. The crew neck makes it perfect under cardis and jumpers. Sue cannot be separated from this style from September onwards. She sometimes layers one on top of the other!

A dream top if you’re slightly rounder of tum (we see you, Hil!) or simply like a bit of drape. The ruching does a very gentle disguise job without being obvious. It’s not corsetry. It’s kindness.

Even if what you click on here is out of stock, pop “Faye” into our search box. We’ve usually got something in the sparkling Faye (and it’s always worth a look).

The Camisoles That Launched A Thousand Sales

We can’t leave out the original Black Colour camisoles. They were our starting point—and we sold more of them in that first season than anyone else in the north of the UK. Fact.

Sue wears hers out. Hil tucks hers in. They both love that you can wear a proper bra underneath. These aren’t skimpy little things. They’re soft, stretchy, and cleavage-enhancing in a “just enough” kind of way. Also, they wash brilliantly at 30 degrees. Fab if you, like Hil, are constantly in a stain frenzy.

Let’s Talk Knitwear and the Black Colour Signature

Black Colour might be best known at Wardrobe at The Cross for its tops, but their knitwear deserves a spotlight all of its own. The Minty jumper is a perfect example of everything they do well—quirky, wearable, elegant knitwear with a twist.

Minty Striped Jumper, Minty Rose

Minty Striped Jumper – Minty Rose

This one’s got short sleeves, a hint of mohair, and colour stripes that are just the right side of playful. You’re not going to see this on every high street. It’s the kind of knit you build an outfit around.

Hil prefers to size down in the Minty because she likes her knits tidy across the bust. Sue, however, loves a bit of boho slouch and goes up a size for that nonchalant, chic, slightly-off-shoulder feel. There’s no wrong way to wear it.

Many of Black Colour’s knits are made with a touch of angora or mohair, and the design details—spots, stripes, unexpected florals—mean they’re anything but basic. They’re joyful. Frothy. Delightfully dreamy and NEVER ordinary.

We’re The UK’s Go-To Boutique for Black Colour

We stock more of Black Colour than most other boutiques in the UK, and we keep it current—so you can count on finding the latest pieces before anyone else.

We’re proud to offer one of the broader (and better stocked) selections of Black Colour in the UK. So if you’re searching for Black Colour UK, this is the place to start—and to stay.

Whether you’re new to the brand or already hooked on the Faye, we’d love you to explore what we’ve got in. Because while we love a trend as much as the next boutique, we love confidence-boosting, long-lasting, stylish dressing even more.

Hil loves fashion. It’s that simple. She also attended Leeds University but insists that you know that she attended this institution in the nineties NOT the eighties – she was a child of the rave generation so please note that the word ‘attended’ is used here in its loosest sense. Hil’s career has mostly been in fashion and digital marketing so that is why you see much more of her in social media – she doesn’t mind making a total wally of herself if it helps people to see how things might be worn and how to style-up major outfit moments. Hil also likes to tell you a lot about her day, its hard to shut her up (just turn off notifications, Sue does!) and she will bore you senseless about different brands, sustainability in fashion, buying locally and CHEESE. She has two girls, two cats and one amazing husband, Graham.
