Hil is 5'3" and a standard UK 10/12, and she wears the Small, which gives her a neat, flattering fit without feeling tight.

Sue is 5'0" and a standard UK size 6, and she wears the XS, which sits close to the body and works beautifully for layering.

If you prefer a leaner, closer fit, you can comfortably size down thanks to the stretch in the fabric. Staying with your usual size will give a slightly more relaxed feel.
